Support the Work
The resources exist. The connections take work.
Throughout Cowichan, people are living in vehicles, encampments, and unsafe housing while spare rooms, underused spaces, practical skills, and opportunities exist all around us.
Rooted Cowichan is working to close that gap.
We’re a circle of mothers with professional and lived experience navigating complex systems, advocating for people we love, and finding creative solutions when conventional pathways lead nowhere.
We know that meaningful housing connections don’t happen simply because someone fills out a form. They happen when people take the time to listen, understand, build relationships, and work through the details that make an arrangement possible.
That work takes time. It takes people. And it takes money.
What your contribution makes possible
When someone reaches out to Rooted looking for housing, we want to do more than add their name to another waiting list.
We want to meet them. Hear their story. Understand their strengths, needs, boundaries, and hopes for the future.
When a homeowner or landowner offers space, we want to do the same. We want to understand their circumstances, visit potential spaces, answer questions, and help everyone explore whether a connection could work.
Sometimes that means sitting around a kitchen table. Sometimes it means driving across the Cowichan Valley, helping someone navigate a government application, coordinating meetings, or spending hours researching an unconventional housing opportunity.
And sometimes it means recognizing that a proposed arrangement isn’t right, and continuing to look for something better.
This is the work that makes Rooted different. It can’t be automated, rushed, or reduced to a database of available rooms.
We’re building relationships, not just matching addresses.
Where the money goes
Financial contributions help us build the practical foundation Rooted needs to operate and grow.
- Community outreach: Meeting people where they are, including rural communities, encampments, and places where traditional services may not reach.
- Transportation: Fuel and travel expenses for meetings, property visits, and connecting people with resources.
- Housing coordination: The time involved in understanding individual circumstances, exploring compatibility, arranging introductions, and supporting thoughtful decisions.
- Systems navigation: Helping people identify and access housing, disability, income, and community supports.
- Communications and administration: Maintaining our website, responding to inquiries, organizing information, and building a reliable network of community connections.
- Fair compensation: Paying the people who do this work so that Rooted can grow without depending entirely on unpaid labour.
We believe community work should be valued as real work. A sustainable housing initiative needs more than good intentions and exhausted volunteers.
Become a founding supporter
Rooted Cowichan is in its early stages, and we’re inviting our community to help build something different from the ground up.
Your contribution helps us create the capacity to meet people, explore opportunities, and begin developing a thoughtful, relationship-based approach to housing connections.
Whether you can contribute $10, $50, $100, or become a recurring supporter, you’re helping make space for work that too often falls between the responsibilities of existing organizations.
We’re not promising that every conversation will result in housing. We are committed to approaching each opportunity with care, curiosity, respect, and the belief that people deserve more than another closed door.
Help us turn community resources into real opportunities.

Other ways to support Rooted
Not everyone can contribute financially, and money isn’t the only resource our communities need.
You might have a spare room, an existing dwelling, professional expertise, materials, transportation, time, or a connection that could help someone find stability.
We’re also interested in partnerships with local businesses, farms, tradespeople, community organizations, and individuals who want to invest in practical housing solutions.
If you’re interested in becoming a founding business supporter, offering in-kind resources, or contributing your skills, we’d love to hear from you.
Building something sustainable
Rooted Cowichan is an emerging, community-powered social enterprise. We are beginning with grassroots contributions and partnerships while exploring longer-term funding models that will allow this work to continue and grow.
We believe people should understand what they’re supporting. Financial contributions will help fund Rooted’s operations, including the coordination, outreach, and paid work involved in developing housing connections.
Rooted is not currently a registered charity. Contributions are voluntary, are not charitable gifts for income-tax purposes, and do not qualify for charitable donation tax receipts.
Our goal is to build a transparent, accountable initiative that demonstrates what can happen when communities invest in relationships as seriously as they invest in programs.
The invitation
We’re not asking our neighbours to solve homelessness on their own. Governments have responsibilities, and meaningful housing justice requires systemic change.
But we don’t have to wait for every policy to change before we begin connecting people with possibilities.
A spare room. A willing landowner. A person with experience navigating disability supports. A business ready to invest in its community. A mother who knows someone who needs a place to land.
These are the beginnings of something.
The resources exist. The connections take work.
Help us do that work.
What do you have? What do you need? What can we create together?
